A multifaceted hub for the Berlin and international music scene is being created in Oberbaum City – with studios, rehearsal rooms, record shops, clubs and commercial spaces. A community built on shared growth, a place in which to live and let live. It is affordable because a big part of the space is reserved for various socio-cultural uses.
The architecture sees itself as a homage to the traditional Berliner Gewerbehöfe, which emerged from the multi-story factories in the 19th century and are now home to Industry 4.0 and the creative economy.
Berlin Doesn’t Grow.
Berlin gets fuller.
As Berliners, we have to make sure this doesn't result in the displacement of people, companies or ideas. It is no easy task. But we are tackling it in Oberbaum City.
become and never
as Karl Scheffler aptly described the city. We therefore want to turn a parking lot and a shed into a place for people, their needs and their dreams.
From high culture to subculture and parallel culture to counterculture, you will find it all here. Culture that has developed organically over the years can and should only be planned to a certain extent.
It is the artistic community, the creative SMEs, the small media companies and the clubs that particularly shape the profile of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district. But it should not be taken for granted that this organically grown centre can continue to exist and grow.
Competition for space is on the rise. Space of every kind is increasingly in demand and more expensive.
As a result, some significant cultural areas have had to make way in recent years for new construction areas, which are also needed in a growing city.
The SeKa working group has found that
For years now, it has been a challenge to identify new space potential for the neighbourhood, its residents and companies related to the cultural scene, and to integrate this space sensibly into building concepts that benefit everyone. It is a matter of daring to do something new without losing the old.
The "Commercial Space Development Concept for Ensuring a Mix of Uses in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg District of Berlin," published by the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, already addressed this task in 2017. It defined relevant hotspots and meeting places in the district that could make particularly important contributions to the healthy and agreeable further development of the neighbourhoods. Rudolfstrasse, which runs between Oberbaum City and Warschauer Brücke, is one of the primary potential areas identified.
With its central and well-connected location at the Warschauer Strasse train station, the western area in particular is suitable for the development of commercial construction projects.
The conceptual design for Tamara-Danz-Höfe was developed based on this assessment and the site characteristics.
As part of Oberbaum City, Rudolfkiez has a rich creative infrastructure between semi-professional and high-end music production and offers space for basement clubs and even concert arenas.
Rudolfstrasse is located right next to the Warschauer Straße S-Bahn and U-Bahn station and within walking distance of many multi-faceted institutions in the music and creative sectors.
The RAW grounds are located north of Rudolfstrasse and provide space for semi-professionals and professionals with businesses including the House of Music, Noisy Rooms and venues such as Astra. Highly professional companies are located to the south and include the globally active Universal Music label.
To the west of Rudolfstrasse are the largest concert stages in the capital: the Mercedes Benz Arena and the Verti Music Hall. Clubs like About Blank and Wilde Renate to the east, which have put Berlin on the world map as a music venue, round off the offering.
- 1. Semi-professional music production
- 2. Major event mainstream
- 3. High-end music production
- 4. Techno underground
But we think more can be done. For this reason, the Tamara-Danz-Höfe are to be created as an urban hinge for the individual music and creative areas.
What are our concrete plans?
A lively hub for residents of Berlin as well as the international music, creative and tech scene is to be created in Rudolfkiez including studios, artist workrooms, rehearsal spaces, record stores, clubs and commercial space. This should further strengthen the site's cultural identity, while actively supporting the continued organic development of the surrounding area.
The neighbourhood feeling
Mutual support and human interaction therefore form the foundation of the project.
The intended mix of uses for the Tamara-Danz-Höfe is community-centric and is intended to unite the entire spectrum of music and creative sectors under a single roof. Networking among specialists is highly relevant especially in the age of digitalization.
It is also affordable, because a significant portion of the space is reserved for various socio-cultural uses.
to the district!
The architecture of Tamara-Danz-Höfe presents itself as an ode to the traditional industrial courtyards of Berlin, which evolved from the multi-level factories in the 19th century and are now the chosen home of Industry 4.0 and the creative sectors.
Sociocultural work in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg will thus be given a location that is oriented toward the common good and sustainably secured.
